Steamboat Willie was created in 1928 by Walt Disney as the first film to use synchronized sound in animation. Working with animator Ub Iwerks, Walt Disney carefully timed music and sound effects to the animation, with Walt Disney himself voicing the new character Steamboat Willie. The film’s successful premiere amazed audiences, set a new standard for animated cartoons, and launched both Walt Disney and the character of Mickey Mouse careers in film animation.
